Updated: March 29, 2026
The March 21 Deepwoken update introduced the Cantrips system, a set of passive elemental utility abilities that activate automatically when you equip Mantras of a given element. The patch also brought Crypt Blade weapon changes, a massive overhaul to the city of Etrea, World Event frequency increases, a new Trinkets currency for Pathfinder, and significant balance adjustments to abilities like Brazen Blow and Rending Impact. Here's the full breakdown of what changed and what it means for your builds.
The headline feature of this update is the Cantrips system. Cantrips are minor, passive utility abilities tied to each elemental attunement. The concept is simple: if you have any Mantra of a given element equipped, you automatically gain access to that element's Cantrip. You don't need a specific Mantra, you don't need a talent point, and you don't need to activate anything manually. Just having a single Frostdraw Mantra equipped, for example, grants you the Frostdraw Cantrip.
This is a significant design shift for Deepwoken. Previously, elemental attunements were purely combat-focused. Cantrips add a survival and exploration layer that makes your element choice matter outside of fights.
| Element | Cantrip | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Frostdraw | Water Purification | Automatically purifies unsafe water into drinkable water when refilling your canteen |
| Galebreathe | Wind Gathering | When multiple identical ingredients are near each other, calls forth wind to gather them all at once |
| Bloodrend | Meat Cleansing | Raw meat is cleansed of pathogens, parasites, and poisons, making it safe to eat without cooking |
| Ironsing | Bare Mining | Mine ores without needing a pickaxe |
| Shadowcast | Night Vision | Grants nightvision similar to the Kiron's aspect passive, improving visibility in dark areas |
| Flamecharm / Thundercall | Produce Spark | Create fire or sparks (replaces the old Produce Spark talent) |
The old Produce Spark talent has been completely reworked. It's now a Cantrip split between Flamecharm and Thundercall, meaning any player with either of those elements equipped gets fire-making capability for free. The previous Produce Spark Vow talent has been replaced by Explosive Ignition, which is now an active talent that functions the way the old Produce Spark did. Players who had Produce Spark on their builds received a refund, so check your talent points if you haven't already.
The Crypt Blade received two notable adjustments in this patch. First, it now has a running critical attack, giving Crypt Blade users a new engagement tool for closing distance and opening fights. Second, the Crypt Blade's critical attack is now jumpable by opponents, meaning skilled defenders can avoid it with properly timed jumps.
The Crypt Blade continues to scale off Shadowcast alongside Heavy Weapons, so existing builds don't need restructuring. The running critical is a pure addition to its moveset, while the jumpable critical is a PvP fairness adjustment that makes the weapon slightly less oppressive in skilled hands.
Etrea received one of the most significant map changes in recent memory. The city's landmass was substantially altered, with the Lord Regent permitting large-scale renovations. The most visible change is a new boardwalk surrounding the White Tree, which adds a scenic walkway and several new NPC locations around one of Deepwoken's most iconic landmarks.
Beyond aesthetics, the Etris Raid has been converted into a Disaster event. This means it no longer functions as a traditional raid with a fixed entry point. Instead, it triggers as a dynamic event within Etrea, similar to how other Disasters spawn across the map. This change makes the encounter more accessible since you don't need to organize a dedicated group, but it also means you can't control when it happens.
World Events now occur every 30 minutes, up from the previous longer interval. The Parasol World Event now drops a smaller chest to every player who is still alive when it ends, rather than only rewarding the top performers. This is a quality-of-life change that makes World Events worth participating in even if you're not the strongest player on the server.
The Battle Royale World Event now awards 2 crowns to the winner, and Carnival of Hearts winners receive 1 crown each, or 2 crowns if 3 or fewer players survive. These crown adjustments increase the value of competing in World Events, especially for players who are grinding crown-gated content.
In Pathfinder, generic treasure items like rubies and emeralds are now converted into a new currency called Trinkets. This streamlines inventory management and makes Pathfinder rewards more fungible.
The Cantrips system has the biggest impact on the day-to-day experience of playing Deepwoken. Survival runs are substantially easier now depending on your element choice. Frostdraw users no longer need to worry about finding clean water sources, which was one of the more tedious aspects of early-game survival. Bloodrend players can eat raw meat safely, eliminating the need to find or craft cooking stations.
Ironsing's pickaxe-free mining is arguably the strongest quality-of-life Cantrip. Mining has always required carrying a pickaxe, which takes up an inventory slot. Now, Ironsing users free up that slot permanently, which matters more than it sounds in a game where inventory management is critical.
Shadowcast's nightvision is the most niche Cantrip but also the most impactful in specific scenarios. Dark areas and nighttime exploration become trivially easy, and the advantage in PvP encounters in dark zones is real. If someone is chasing you through a cave, Shadowcast users have a significant visibility advantage.
The Crypt Blade changes land differently depending on your perspective. If you're a Crypt Blade main, the running critical is a welcome addition that gives you more initiation options. If you're fighting against Crypt Blades, the jumpable critical is a needed counterplay option. Overall, the weapon remains strong but slightly more balanced.
Several abilities received targeted nerfs in this patch. Brazen Blow had its hyperarmor duration reduced from 2 seconds to 1 second, which is a significant hit to its effectiveness as a trading tool. Previously, you could tank through most attacks during Brazen Blow's animation. Now, the window is tight enough that mistiming it gets you punished.
Rending Impact received an actual cooldown of 30 seconds. This ability was being spammed in PvP due to having no meaningful cooldown, and the 30-second timer forces players to use it strategically rather than as a default option. Other abilities received smaller adjustments that mostly affect edge cases.
Campfires can now be lit by simply interacting with them, which removes the need for a fire-starting tool or talent. Combined with the Flamecharm/Thundercall Cantrip, fire management in the wild has become much more streamlined.
As of March 29, 2026, no new codes have been released alongside the Cantrips update. Deepwoken rarely releases promotional codes, and when they do appear, they tend to be tied to community milestones or developer streams. Keep checking our Deepwoken codes page for any new additions.
If you're primarily a PvE/survival player, Frostdraw and Bloodrend are the two strongest Cantrips. Water and food are the two most persistent survival challenges, and these Cantrips eliminate one of them entirely. Running both through a dual-element build solves both problems simultaneously.
For PvP-focused players, Shadowcast is the standout. Nightvision in dark zones gives you a tangible advantage in fights, and the Crypt Blade (which scales off Shadowcast) just got buffed with the running critical. A Shadowcast/Heavy Weapons build with the Crypt Blade is a strong combination right now.
Galebreathe's ingredient gathering is useful for players who craft frequently, but it's more of a convenience than a necessity. Ironsing's pickaxe-free mining is universally useful regardless of playstyle, freeing up an inventory slot that matters in every scenario.
The hyperarmor reduction from 2 seconds to 1 second means you can't use Brazen Blow as a panic button anymore. Previously, you could activate it reactively after being hit and still benefit from the full hyperarmor window. Now, you need to predict when the enemy is about to attack and time your Brazen Blow proactively. The ability is still strong, but it's shifted from a reactive trading tool to a predictive one.
If you relied heavily on Brazen Blow in your PvP rotation, consider supplementing it with other hyperarmor sources or switching to a more mobile playstyle that doesn't require tanking through hits.
With World Events now spawning every 30 minutes, you should be checking for them consistently during any extended play session. The crown rewards from Battle Royale (2 crowns for winners) and Carnival of Hearts (1-2 crowns depending on survivors) make these the most efficient crown farming method in the game right now.
The Parasol World Event change is particularly noteworthy. Since every surviving player now receives a chest, it's worth staying alive even if you're not competitive enough to win. Play defensively, let others fight, and collect your guaranteed reward.
The Cantrips system has been one of the most positively received additions to Deepwoken in recent memory. Players have been asking for non-combat reasons to invest in elemental attunements for a long time, and Cantrips deliver exactly that. The fact that they activate from a single Mantra rather than requiring dedicated talent points makes them accessible to every build, which has been widely praised.
The Crypt Blade running critical has divided opinions. Crypt Blade mains love the new initiation option, but opponents argue the weapon was already strong enough before the buff. The jumpable critical partially offsets the buff, but the community is still evaluating whether the net change is a buff or a sidegrade.
Etrea's overhaul has drawn mostly positive responses. The new boardwalk around the White Tree is visually striking, and converting the Etris Raid into a Disaster has made the content more accessible. Some veteran players miss the organized raid format, but the consensus is that Disasters are better for the game's health since they don't require dedicated group coordination.
The Brazen Blow and Rending Impact nerfs have been controversial but generally accepted as necessary. Both abilities were overperforming in PvP, and the adjustments bring them more in line with other options. The 30-second cooldown on Rending Impact, in particular, has been called overdue.

Cantrips are minor utility abilities unlocked by equipping Mantras of a given element. Each elemental attunement grants a passive Cantrip that provides a useful non-combat ability, such as Frostdraw purifying water, Galebreathe gathering ingredients with wind, or Ironsing mining ores without a pickaxe.
Cantrips are unlocked automatically when you equip any Mantra from a given element. You don't need a specific Mantra or talent point. Any single Mantra of an element activates that element's Cantrip. Unequipping all Mantras of an element removes access to its Cantrip.
The Crypt Blade received a running critical attack and its Critical attack is now jumpable by opponents. It continues to scale off Shadowcast alongside Heavy Weapons. These changes make it slightly more fair in PvP while adding a new offensive option.
Produce Spark was converted into a Flamecharm and Thundercall Cantrip. The old Produce Spark Vow talent has been replaced by Explosive Ignition, which is now an active talent that works how Produce Spark previously did. Players who had Produce Spark received a refund.
Etrea received substantial changes to its landmass. The Lord Regent permitted large renovations of the city, including a new boardwalk surrounding the White Tree. The Etris Raid was also converted into a Disaster event, and the Pathfinder system now converts generic treasure into a new currency called Trinkets.
