Feather Family is a long-running Roblox bird roleplay sandbox where you pick from 70+ real and mythical species, hatch and grow up, build nests, raise chick offspring, and live out avian family life in flocks across open biomes. Built by The Feather Family group and live since January 2018, it is a genuine Roblox institution with over 1.4 billion visits, around 7,000 concurrent players, and a 91% rating. This guide covers how the sandbox works, how to earn Feathers to unlock species, building nests and raising chicks, joining flocks, the four Robux birds and the VIB pass, and how to earn free Robux.

What Is Feather Family?
Feather Family is an open-ended bird roleplay sandbox by The Feather Family group, where you choose from 70+ bird species, hatch from an egg, grow from hatchling to adult, and live out family life — building nests, raising chicks, and joining flocks across open biomes. It is a social and creative game, not a quest game: there is no hard win-state, no hunger death, and no forced survival on place ID 1365404657.
Created on January 24, 2018 and updated constantly (the current title is "Feather Family [Grebe]"), it has become one of Roblox's biggest animal games: over 1.4 billion visits, around 7,000 concurrent players, more than 2.1 million favorites, and a 91.6% rating as of July 2026. Servers hold up to 60 players, which is why flocks and roleplay feel so alive. If you want a relaxing, deeply customizable animal-life game, this is one of the best on the platform.
How the Sandbox Works
Feather Family is a roleplay sandbox: you choose a bird, customize it heavily, and then live however you like — fly, explore, nest, raise a family, or socialize.
1. Choose and Customize a Bird
You start as an egg or a bird and pick a species. Every bird is deeply customizable across Color, Texture, Markings, and Effects, with tinting for the beak, head, chest, wings, legs, and tail — plus a custom name. This customization is a huge part of the appeal.
2. Grow Up
Birds progress through life stages, from hatchling to adult. Growing to adulthood matters because only adult birds can build nests and raise offspring.
3. Live and Roleplay
From there it is open-ended: fly and glide across biomes, swim if you are a water bird (the June 2026 Grebe update recoded swimming, and lava is now swimmable), pick up and carry items, and roleplay family or social scenarios with other players.
Earning Feathers
Feathers are the free currency that unlocks new species. You earn them passively just by playing — roughly 10 Feathers every 2 minutes while active and about 5 every 2 minutes while idle (around 100 per 20 minutes). There is a cap on how many you can hold at once (sources cite 10,000), so spend before you hit it.
Because Feathers accrue even while idle, leaving the game running banks currency toward pricier birds. The most expensive standard species cost up to around 3,000 Feathers (roughly 10 hours of play), so it pays to save toward one target species rather than spreading Feathers thin on many cheap ones. Cheaper birds start as low as ~10 Feathers, so you always have something to work toward.
Bird Species
Feather Family has roughly 70+ playable species, split into three groups. About 14 are standard free birds available from the start — Sparrow, Pigeon, Cardinal, Robin, Chicken, Duck, Goose, Quail, Turkey, Swan, Pheasant and more. Around 55 are Feather-unlockable, including Eagle, Hawk, Falcon, Raven, Owl, Vulture, Heron, Crane, Stork, Pelican, Flamingo, Toucan, Kingfisher, Penguin, Ostrich, Shoebill, Secretary Bird, Albatross, Macaw, Peafowl, Hummingbird, and even extinct species like Archaeopteryx added in "Summer of Fossils" events.
The final group is the four Robux birds, all mythological with unique GUIs and abilities: Phoenix (fire-spewing), Griffin (cloud-walking), Cockatrice (glowing eyes), and Peryton. Exact species counts vary by source and update, so treat "70+" as the reliable figure. Whichever bird you pick, the customization options mean no two birds look the same.
Nests, Eggs & Chicks
Raising a family is the heart of Feather Family. Only adult birds can build nests, so grow up first. Nests come in several types — Stick, Rock, Dirt, Burrow, Mound, and Cavity — and their size scales to your species. Once you have a nest, you can spawn up to 3 AI offspring as eggs, which you can color and texture before hatching them into hatchlings.
You can only keep 3 offspring at once, so personalize each egg before hatching for a family that looks the way you want. This nesting-and-raising loop, combined with flocks, is what turns Feather Family from a flying game into a full roleplay experience.
Flocks & Family Life
Flocks are the central social system. You can create, join, or leave flocks to live as a family, communicate, and roleplay together. With up to 60 players per server, flocks make the world feel like a living ecosystem — families nesting together, raising chicks, and defending territory in roleplay.
Joining or starting a flock early is the best way to get into the game's main loop. If you own the VIB pass you can even color your flock base. Whether you want a tight family unit or a big social flock, this is where Feather Family's community really shines.
Pro Tips
- Leave the game running to bank Feathers. You earn ~5 per 2 minutes even idle, so AFK play still saves toward pricier birds.
- Save for one target species. Top standard birds cost up to ~3,000 Feathers — prioritize one rather than many cheap birds.
- Grow to adult before nesting. Only adult birds can build nests, so reach adulthood first, then build.
- Personalize your eggs. You can keep only 3 offspring — color and texture each egg before hatching.
- Join a flock early. Flocks are the main social/roleplay loop and let you live as a family unit.
- Consider the VIB pass for customization. It unlocks most textures and effects, nest and base coloring, custom music, and RP server hosting across every bird.
Robux Birds & the VIB Pass
Feather Family's Robux purchases center on the four mythical birds and the VIB (Very Important Bird) pass. The VIB pass (reported around 300 Robux) is the oldest pass and is not a bird — it unlocks the ability to host roleplay servers, most Textures (Neon, Plastic, Metal, Plush and more) and Effects (Leaf, Sparkles, Fire, Lightning and more), nest and flock-base coloring, and custom audio-ID music, and it applies to all your birds.
The four mythical birds — Phoenix, Cockatrice, Peryton, and Griffin — are sold as game passes (reported roughly 400–600 Robux each) and come with unique abilities like Phoenix's fire-spew and Griffin's cloud-walking. Pass prices come from community guides, so confirm the exact Robux in-game before buying. If you want maximum customization and roleplay flexibility, the VIB pass is the best single purchase; the mythical birds are for players who want a standout, ability-equipped species.
Does It Have Codes?
As of July 2026, Feather Family does not have a code system at all — there is no code button, input field, or redemption menu anywhere in the game, and every reputable tracker agrees. Rewards come only from playtime (Feathers) and Robux passes, not promo codes. Any "Feather Family code" you see online is fabricated or for a different game. We cover the honest status on our Feather Family codes page, which explains how to earn Feathers instead.
