Northern Isles Expansion -- What You Need to Know
The Northern Isles Expansion is the biggest content update Rusty Rafts has received since launch. It adds an entire frozen biome to the north of the main ocean map, complete with ice-covered islands, drifting icebergs, and a new weather system that includes snowstorms reducing visibility to near zero.
Resources in the Northern Isles are different from the standard ocean. Frost Crystals replace regular gems and are used to craft cold-tier equipment like the Insulated Hull and Thermal Suit. Both resources only spawn in the frozen biome, so you'll need to make regular trips north once your crafting tree reaches tier 3.
The hostile wildlife is no joke. Polar Sharks patrol the ice floe edges and deal roughly double the damage of standard sharks. Snow Gulls can steal items directly from open storage crates if you don't have lids crafted. Keep your storage secured and your Harpoon loaded when sailing through Northern Isles waters.
Ice floe hazards are the real threat, though. Drifting ice chunks can collide with your raft and break foundation tiles outright. The Reinforced Foundation from Workbench tier 2 resists ice damage much better than basic tiles. If you haven't upgraded yet, the Northern Isles will punish you quickly.
