DON'T LOOK BACK Beginner's Guide – Survive Night One, Loot Faster & Buy the Right Gear

By Money Lord — Founder & Editor | Updated: August 16, 2026

Most new players in DON'T LOOK BACK die on night one because they spent their scrap cash on a weapon instead of a tracker. This guide gives you the exact purchase order, the real shop prices with their level gates, all ten confirmed threats, every map and night-event modifier, and an honest read on which of the eight game passes are worth Robux.

What this guide covers

  1. Learn the day/night loop before you spend a cent
  2. Vote for the map and night event that suit you
  3. Know all ten threats before they know you
  4. Buy gear in the right order — full prices and level gates
  5. Clear power outages and daily objectives
  6. Decide which game passes are actually worth Robux

To set expectations: DON'T LOOK BACK is explicitly labelled pre-alpha by developer Manul Studio, and its Roblox description warns that "bugs and frequent updates are to be expected." Everything here was verified on August 16, 2026, and a few numbers have already moved during pre-alpha patches — we flag exactly which ones rather than pretending they are fixed. The game launched July 12, 2026 and, as of August 16, 2026, runs 9,104 concurrent players against 2,304,648 visits and 34,762 favourites, with an all-time peak of 11,735 and a rating of 6,527 likes to 1,088 dislikes (roughly 86% positive).

Learn the Day/Night Loop Before You Spend a Cent

Every round runs the same two-phase cycle. During the day phase you loot scraps, complete objectives and move freely, then return to the shop to sell what you gathered and buy gear. Then night falls, a set of threats is selected, and your only job is to survive until dawn.

The detail beginners miss is that the shop has a dedicated Sell Scraps tab with a Sell All button. Scraps are not currency on their own — they are inventory that must be converted, and entering night one still holding them is dead weight a death will cost you.

The shop also throws a warning modal on your first purchase worth quoting exactly: "You can only own one of each weapon or equipment item. If you lose one on death, rebuy it at the shop for 40%." That rule shapes the whole economy. You cannot stockpile three shovels, and dying costs a 40% re-purchase fee rather than everything — so saving for one big-ticket weapon is a genuine strategy, because you only ever buy each item once.

  1. Spend the day phase looting scraps and hitting whatever objective the panel shows.
  2. Return to the shop and use the Sell Scraps tab, then Sell All — do not enter night holding unsold scrap.
  3. Buy exactly one upgrade with the cash, prioritising detection over damage.
  4. Survive the night. If you die, re-buying a lost item costs 40%, not full price.
The biggest beginner mistake: buying a weapon on day one. Most threats here kill you from a direction you never checked, so detection beats damage until you can afford both.

Vote for the Map and Night Event That Suit You

Before each round the lobby runs two votes. The first, VOTE FOR TONIGHT'S MAP, offers three options confirmed in-game and in the official Roblox description:

The second vote, PICK AN EVENT, sets the night's difficulty modifier. Five options are confirmed; the parenthetical text is the game's own wording:

Vote NORMAL NIGHT every time until you have a vest and a tracker. Eclipse punishes players on the default flashlight, and Swarm Night removes the luxury of handling one threat at a time. THE BACKROOMS map will feel familiar if you have played Backrooms or Apeirophobia — though it is an original Manul Studio map sharing the aesthetic, not a port of either game.

Know All Ten Threats Before They Know You

Before dark, a TONIGHT'S THREATS panel lists which entities are active that round — only a subset spawns each night, which is what "each night is different" means. Ten threat names are confirmed as of August 16, 2026, each seen in at least two independent captures from different channels:

ThreatNotes
HidebehindOn threat rosters in every capture
WendigoDeath message: "You died to Wendigo"
MimicOn threat rosters
Shrieker"SHRIEKER HAS RESPAWNED" alert
Big FootTwo words in-game, not "Bigfoot"
Cultist"CULTIST HAS RESPAWNED" alert
Hunter"HUNTER HAS RESPAWNED" alert
Siren HeadTwo words; also has its own night event
The Locust"THE LOCUST HAS RESPAWNED" alert
EffigyOn threat rosters

Threats respawn during the night — the recurring "HAS RESPAWNED" alerts make that explicit. Killing something buys time, not safety, so running is often the better play.

The game also uses a timed LOOK AWAY mechanic, shown as an on-screen countdown ticking in tenths of a second, alongside a CLOSE YOUR EYES prompt — when it appears, break line of sight immediately. We saw this countdown in three separate captures, but they disagreed on which entity triggers it, so we will not name one. Treat any LOOK AWAY prompt as universal: turn away first, identify later.

Buy the Entity Tracker at $200 before anything else. With ten possible threats, mid-night respawns and a look-away mechanic, positional information is the resource you are short of. The Advanced Entity Tracker at $350 is the Level 10 upgrade.

Buy Gear in the Right Order — Full Prices and Level Gates

The shop has eight tabs: Equipment, Weapons, Armor, Consumables, Emotes, Passes, Repair and Sell Scraps. Prices below were read from in-game captures and cross-checked across three independent recordings. A shown level requirement gates the purchase entirely.

Equipment — buy from this tab first

ItemPriceRequirement
Watch$100
GPS$150
Entity Tracker$200
Camera$225
Advanced Entity Tracker$350Level 10

Armor — your second purchase

ItemPriceRequirement
Light Vest$400
Police Vest$700Level 10
Tactical Military Vest$1,150Level gate shown, exact tier disputed

Armor is not cosmetic. With the Police Vest equipped the HUD reads "-20% damage taken | VEST EQUIPPED: POLICE VEST" — a flat, stated mitigation figure that makes $700 one of the better buys once you clear Level 10.

Weapons — only after detection and armor

ItemPriceRequirement
Shovel$350
Flare Gun$450
Sledge Hammer$500
Katana$700Level 10
Hunting Rifle$800
Peacemaker Revolver$1,250Level gate shown, exact tier disputed
Double-Barrel Shotgun$2,000Level 20
M16A4$2,800Level 20
Barrett .M82$3,750Level 30

Consumables and Emotes

Consumables are cheap and worth stocking: Bandage $15, Energy Drink $35, Medkit $45. Every emote — Russian Dance, California Girls Dance, Griddy, Breakdance, Shuffle and Rat Dance — costs a flat $600. They are purely cosmetic; skip them until your gear is sorted, because $600 is a Police Vest with change left over.

Prices move in pre-alpha — check before you commit. Across captures recorded days apart we saw the GPS at $100 and $150, the Hunting Rifle at $800 and $950, the Peacemaker Revolver at $1,250 and $1,500, the Bandage at $15 and $20, and the Medkit at $45 and $55. We publish the figure seen in the majority of captures, but treat every number as a snapshot. Level gates for the Tactical Military Vest and Peacemaker Revolver also differed, so we flagged those rather than guessing.

Clear Power Outages and Daily Objectives

Two systems give you progress beyond looting. The first is the DAILY OBJECTIVES panel, docked top-left and minimisable mid-round, with its own Reset objectives button. Objectives are specific and countable — one confirmed example reads "Keep the Lights On — survive or repair 1 power outages."

That ties into power outages. A POWER OUTAGE banner appears when the map's power drops; you resolve it by finding a POWER BOX and completing a yellow alignment mini-game, after which the screen confirms POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED. Chase outages rather than avoid them — they clear objectives while you are already out looting.

There is also a REWARD button — the gift icon on the right-hand side of the main menu — which opens daily and playtime rewards. This is where a lot of players get confused, so to state it plainly and once: DON'T LOOK BACK has no code redemption box anywhere in its interface as of August 16, 2026. That gift icon is a daily-reward panel, not a code entry field. The main menu consists of SHOP, PLAY, CONTROLS and UPDATES, with SETTINGS, INVENTORY and REWARD on the right rail, and none of them contain a redeem option. If you want to understand how we test claims like this before publishing them, our how we verify codes page explains the process.

Decide Which Game Passes Are Actually Worth Robux

DON'T LOOK BACK sells eight game passes. These prices come straight from the Roblox game-pass API and are current as of August 16, 2026:

Game PassPriceEffect
Stronger Flashlight49 R$Flashlight is 1.5× brighter and reaches farther
Stamina Boost79 R$+25 max stamina — sprint longer between breaths
+2 Hotbar Slots129 R$Two extra hotbar slots
Scrap Insurance179 R$Keep all scraps on death
Bonus Cash249 R$Earn 1.5× more cash
Permanent Peacemaker Revolver249 R$Permanent unlock of the $1,250 revolver
Permanent M16A4399 R$Permanent unlock of the $2,800 rifle
Permanent Barrett M82599 R$Permanent unlock of the $3,750 rifle

If you buy only one, Stronger Flashlight at 49 R$ is the standout — cheapest pass in the list, and against an Eclipse event that explicitly reduces visibility, extra light range is a permanent edge. Stamina Boost at 79 R$ is next best, since running is the main answer to most threats and +25 is a stated number rather than a vague buff.

Be warier of the three permanent-weapon passes. Permanent M16A4 and Permanent Barrett M82 were added on August 11 and August 10, 2026 — recent additions to a pre-alpha game, and their level gates (20 and 30) mean you would not use them for a long while. Scrap Insurance at 179 R$ targets the real sting, since scraps are what death costs you, but remember lost gear already re-buys at 40% without it.

Compare like for like. Bonus Cash and Permanent Peacemaker Revolver both cost 249 R$ — one multiplies every payout by 1.5× for the whole session, the other unlocks a single item you can earn for $1,250. Past a couple of hours, the multiplier wins.

Where These Facts Come From

Stats, dates, game-pass names, effects and Robux prices were pulled live from the Roblox API on August 16, 2026 against universe ID 10493730706 and root place ID 127332613700317. That identity check matters: "Don't Look Back" is a common horror title with several unrelated games using it. Maps came from the official Roblox description. Threat names, events, shop prices, level gates and UI text were read from three independent gameplay recordings by different creators, and we state a detail as fact only where at least two agree. Where they disagreed — several prices, two level gates and the LOOK AWAY trigger — we say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I buy first in DON'T LOOK BACK?

Buy the Entity Tracker at $200 before any weapon. Knowing where a threat is beats being able to hit it, because most beginner deaths happen to something you never saw. After that, the Light Vest at $400 gives you a damage buffer, and the Shovel at $350 covers you if you are forced to fight.

How many threats are in DON'T LOOK BACK?

Ten threats have been confirmed on screen as of August 16, 2026: Hidebehind, Wendigo, Mimic, Shrieker, Big Foot, Cultist, Hunter, Siren Head, The Locust and Effigy. Only a subset spawns on any given night, and the game announces which ones in the TONIGHT'S THREATS panel before dark.

Does DON'T LOOK BACK have codes?

No. As of August 16, 2026 there is no code redemption box anywhere in DON'T LOOK BACK. The gift icon on the main menu is labelled REWARD and opens daily and playtime rewards, not a code field. The menu buttons are SHOP, PLAY, CONTROLS and UPDATES — none contain a redeem option.
